Redding sets no annual weed abatement deadline and no inch standard. Enforcement is complaint and inspection driven under Redding Municipal Code 1.14 and 1.15, plus the California Fire Code test for growth capable of being ignited. Your deadline is the date printed on your compliance order, so read it and calendar it. Hazardous vegetation on vacant lots and private property is handled by the Redding Fire Department at (530) 225-4141. Overgrown vegetation treated as blight goes to Code Enforcement at (530) 245-7110. Call the department named on your notice first, then call a crew.
Outside city limits the rules carry numbers. Shasta County's ordinance, adopted in September 2025, requires weeds and annual grasses kept to 4 inches or less. Parcels of 2 acres or less have to be treated across the entire parcel. Parcels of 2 to 10 acres need at least a 30-foot cleared perimeter or an approved plan, and adjacent parcels under the same owner count as one. The county Fire Warden enforces it, and unincorporated notices can allow as few as five calendar days. Anderson deems a lawn overgrown when half of it passes 12 inches. The cutting window here is set by the weather. NOAA normals for Redding put July at an average high of 99.9 degrees with 0.07 inches of rain, and 33.52 inches for the year. December through March carry 67 percent of that rain. Grass that is green in April is cured fuel by June, and it stays that way until the fall rains come back. Cutting in late spring or early summer gets the growth down before it cures and before an inspector drives by. We do this work in Cottonwood, Palo Cedro, Shasta Lake and our Anderson service area.
Weeds come back from seed and crown, so a single cut holds for a season. We handle regrowth with scheduled cuts sized to the parcel, which keeps the ground at standard and keeps the property off the inspection list. A parcel with a house or shop on it also carries a defensible space duty. California law requires 100 feet of clearance in the State Responsibility Area, and it counts grasses and weeds as fuel, which is the defensible space work we do around structures. Burn permits in the Shasta County State Responsibility Area have been suspended since June 15, 2026, so cut material is staged or hauled rather than burned.
Vacant land is where the enforcement hooks are written. Redding routes hazardous vegetation on vacant lots to its Fire Department, and Shasta County's ordinance applies to parcels whether improved or unimproved. The duty stays with the owner. Redding's code makes it non-delegable regardless of any agreement with a third party, so a tenant or a property manager cannot carry the notice for you. That matters most when the parcel is held land, a rental, or ground you own from out of the area. Nobody drives past it, the growth cures, and the first news is a letter.
What closes a file is proof. We photograph the parcel before and after, cut to the standard the notice names, and write the scope in acreage and linear footage. The photos are dated the day the crew works, so the timeline in your file matches the order. You also get a certificate of insurance if your vendor file needs one. Payment splits in half, and the second half is due when the job is complete to your satisfaction.
