How much does it cost to clean up an overgrown lot?
Published ranges for overgrown lot cleanup run from a few hundred dollars on a light city lot to $3,000 or more on a heavily overgrown half acre. HomeAdvisor puts a quarter acre at $125 to $500 light and $750 to $1,400 heavy; LawnStarter’s heavy half-acre range tops out near $3,100. Growth density, trash in the growth, and disposal drive the spread.
Those are national numbers. What makes a Redding quote specific is local: what the transfer station charges, what gets refused at the gate, and what the enforcement alternative costs if the lot stays wild. Here is all of it, and when you want the ground handled, lot cleanup is the service built for exactly this. If a notice started the clock, weed abatement to the enforced standard is the faster path.
What do cleanups cost by lot size?
| Lot size and condition | Published range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| City lot, standard cleanup | $200–$500 | Fixr |
| City lot, overgrown premium | $300–$700 | Fixr |
| Quarter acre, light growth | $125–$583 | HomeAdvisor, LawnStarter |
| Quarter acre, heavy growth | $750–$1,539 | HomeAdvisor, LawnStarter |
| Half acre, light growth | $250–$1,167 | HomeAdvisor, LawnStarter |
| Half acre, heavy growth | $1,698–$3,078 | LawnStarter |
| Full acre, light growth | $500–$2,333 | HomeAdvisor, LawnStarter |
| Full acre, heavy growth | $3,300–$6,155 | LawnLove, LawnStarter |
| Debris haul-off | $50–$100 per load, $200–$550 total | Fixr |
Add line items where they exist: published tree removal averages $630 to $700 per tree, stumps $100 to $350 each, and junk hauls around $225 per load. A lot that collected dumped trash while it was overgrown is two jobs wearing one address, and an honest quote prices both.
What do Redding dump fees add?
This is the local cost most owners never see until the invoice. The City of Redding Transfer Station on Abernathy Lane charges, on rates effective July 2025:
- Green waste: $15 to $19 per pickup load by fill level, or $34.75 per ton
- Mixed household or construction debris: $31 to $38 per pickup load, or $112 to $114.50 per ton
- Every load must be tarped before it enters
Read those two rates again, because the gap is the game: mixed loads cost roughly three times green waste by the ton. A trailer of brush with trash mixed in bills at the trash rate. Keeping loads separated is real money, and it is part of how we scope debris on every job.
The second local wrinkle: the Transfer Station refuses dirt, rock, concrete, and stumps with root balls. That material goes out to the West Central Landfill in Igo as demolition debris, about $60 per ton on its posted 2024 rates, and 20-plus extra road miles. A quote that assumed one destination gets rewritten at the scale house.
What pushes a cleanup quote up?
In rough order of impact: how tall and woody the growth is, whether junk and hardscape are mixed into it, tree and stump count, access for carrying material out, and haul distance. Slope matters too, since everything on a slope moves by hand. None of this is visible from the street, which is why we quote from a walk, in writing, with the debris plan named. For the per-acre math on the vegetation itself, see brush clearing cost per acre.
Do you need a permit to clear a lot?
Usually no. Inside Redding city limits, the city’s permit handout says clearing up to one acre at a single site needs no clearing permit, and clearing required by the fire marshal is exempt outright. The catches: trees over 6 inches in diameter need a city tree permit at $65 per tree, moving dirt triggers grading rules, and disturbing more than an acre brings state stormwater filing. The full picture, county included, is in do you need a permit to clear land in California.
What does the do-nothing option cost?
More than the cleanup. Redding requires vegetation and debris maintenance on all properties, enforcement is complaint-driven, and a forced abatement bills at the full cost of the procedure, contractor and hearings and lien filing included, then attaches to the parcel. Unincorporated Shasta County can specially assess the cost against the property. The mechanics are laid out in what to do about a weed abatement notice.
Against that, published maintenance pricing looks cheap: Fixr puts an annual quarter-acre contract at $200 to $500 versus $300 to $2,000 for a single rescue visit. For owners who are not local, landlords between tenants, and commercial parcel holders, a standing schedule is the version of this cost that never surprises you.
