A fire break is the strip along the edge of your land. Clearing the 100 feet around your home is defensible space creation, a separate job with its own rules. When a parcel needs both, we write both into one estimate.

In unincorporated Shasta County, Chapter 8.10 of the county code (Ordinance SCC 2025-03) sets rules for urban parcels. An urban parcel is any parcel of 10 acres or smaller, built on or not. On those parcels, firebreaks may be required alongside parcel boundary lines. They are 30 feet wide whenever a parcel's vegetation creates a significant fire hazard to an adjacent parcel.
Parcels of 2 to under 10 acres keep a 30-foot perimeter of defensible space, or a mitigation plan the fire warden specifies. Fuel on your parcel can also threaten the 100-foot defensible space around a building next door. Then you keep up to 30 feet of defensible space in from your property line. The fire warden can require more, up to 100 feet.
On steep slopes, the fire warden may approve a modified firebreak to control erosion. The same option covers wildlife habitat, endangered species and vernal pools. Under Chapter 8.10, a violation can be prosecuted as an infraction or a misdemeanor.
People use the two words loosely. A firebreak usually means a strip with almost nothing left to burn. A fuel break keeps plants in place but cuts them low and thins them out. Thinning across whole acreage, beyond a strip, is wildfire fuel reduction.
Shasta County's code uses the word firebreak for the 30-foot strip along a parcel line. In unincorporated Shasta County, the code calls for mowing, cutting, grazing or trimming methods that minimize surface disturbance. Those methods also have to keep root structure intact and prevent soil erosion.
Read together, the county's firebreak is a cut strip with roots still holding the soil. Weeds and annual grasses stay at 4 inches or less, and stumps are cut no higher than 8 inches. That describes hand-crew work. Our brush cutters and string trimmers cut above the soil line, and the ground stays intact.
We set the strip width with you at the free walk-through. Blade heads on our brush cutters go through brush about two fingers thick and take it to ground level. Backpack string trimmers bring grass and weeds down to 4 inches or less. Routine trimming along fences and road frontage is its own service, fence line and roadside clearing.
The Shasta County Fire Safe Council runs a free chipping program, and you sign up with the council directly. It takes piles up to 8 feet wide, 4 feet high and 10 feet deep, with 2 per property. Branches must be at least 3 feet long and no more than 8 inches across. Piles must be stacked by hand, and that is how our crew builds them.
Material the program cannot take goes out by the trailer-load when haul-off is scoped in the estimate. In unincorporated Shasta County, the code allows on-site chipping when chips are spread no deeper than 6 inches. Tree removal is outside our work, and so is anything that moves soil.
